Endodontics

Endodontics

When it comes to the endodontic treatment, generally root canal treatment comes to mind. Among the tooth treatment operations, the most frightening treatment is generally root canal treatment. Today, the root canal treatment is realized in a single session in the live teeth and generally in two sessions in the teeth losing their aliveness.

What is root canal treatment?

Inside the tooth, there are a chamber (dental pulp chamber) containing the blood, lymph veins and nerves and canals extending to the roots. In the big decays or big fractures in the tooth, this nerve tissue dies. The infection happens inside the tooth due to the bacteria in the saliva. In this case, the root canal treatment is required for rescuing the tooth.

Why is root canal treatment needed?

  • If there is infection or permanent damage in dental pulp, the root canal treatment is needed.
  • The fracture, cracking and trauma happened in the tooth, or deep restorative works such as one or more realized fillings can give damages to the dental pulp after certain duration.
  • The persons to which crown will be applied can need root canal treatment for tooth root before the application.
  • Before the root canal treatment, the roentgen of the tooth is drawn and it is determined whether an inflammation exists or not. The inflammation available in the dental pulp can cause pain or infection. The infection happening in the dental pulp can cause the abscess formation and damage on the bone surrounding the tooth.
  • In case a root canal treatment is not applied to a tooth which gets damaged and is infected, the tooth becomes the infection center of the body.
  • If the root canal treatment is not realized, it can be required to pull out the tooth. It is always preferred to protect the natural tooth. One or more tooth missing can cause the replacement of the neighboring teeth and deformation of posture. Also, protecting the natural teeth does not require the application of expensive and deep treatments such as implant and bridges.

Issues to be considered in root canal treatment and after it

During the treatment;

  • The root canal treatment is generally completed in two or more sessions. Between these sessions, temporary filling or crown is applied for protecting the tooth.
  • After the sessions in which anesthesia is used, there can be anesthesia that will last for a couple of hours in your lips, teeth and tongue. Avoid from eating anything till the complete removal of this anesthesia.
  • The wearing and fracture of the temporary filling applied between the sessions is a frequently encountered (but not being a problem) situation. If the whole filling or the temporary crown gets out, consult to your dentist.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salty water three times in a day to decrease the pain and swelling much more; melt one tea spoon of salt in one cup of warm water and rinse your mouth.

To protect your tooth and keep the  temporarily used filling or crown in their places:

  • Avoid from chewing the adhesive foods (especially gum).
  • Avoid from the hard foods and objects such as ice, nail or pencil.
  • If you can do, chew the foods by using the teeth on the other side of your mouth.

After treatment;

  • It is important that you should brush your teeth normally and continue to clean them with dental floss.
  • It is a normal situation that we can feel discomfort for a while especially during the chewing after a root canal treatment. To get this discomfort under control, you can use painkillers. If the antibiotic usage is recommended, use them till the end of the mentioned duration even if all symptoms of the infection disappear.
  • If you have problem in biting, your pain is continuous or you have another question or discomfort, consult to your dentist.
